Jack Murphy Joins Coaching Staff

Posted by Peyton Merriam On May - 31 - 2009

According to many sources, the Denver Nuggets’ lead advance scout and video coordinator, Jack Murphy, has accepted the position of assistant coach for the University of Memphis Tigers. Murphy, a long time friend of head coach Josh Pastner, has become a key contributor on the Nuggets’ staff this season. Murphy provided scouting information on upcoming opponents for the Nuggets, as well as organizing a rigorous off-season workout program that hosted Allen Iverson, Kenyon Martin, and Carmelo Anthony.

During an interview with the Denver Post, Murphy had this to say about joining the Tiger’s coaching staff: “Going to the University of Memphis is an unbelievable opportunity to have my first assistant coaching job, and at my age. It’s a humbling situation I’m walking into, it really is.” (read the rest of the story here: link)

Bon jour! Martin visits Memphis

Posted by Peyton Merriam On May - 30 - 2009

n1020927700_75571_4169Earlier this week, buzz began to circulate on MemphisRoar’s message board about the potential of adding a foreign player that would “remind fans of Robert Dozier.” Well, after tracking down some information, verifying that the timing was right for the release of the name and doing some research on the infamous Frenchman, MemphisRoar is elated to bring some positive news to Tiger fans. 2009 SF prospect Martin Ngaloro from France will be visiting the University of Memphis starting tomorrow. Ngaloro, who is expected to arrive at the Memphis International Airport late tomorrow afternoon, is a 6′9″ 210lbs guard who plays the three position.

“I’ m  from France,” said Ngaloro. “I started [playing] basketball at the age of 6. I have two older sisters and one younger brother. I play the three. I like to play a fast style, run, shoot and jump.”

Earlier today, reports came out on local radio station 560 AM that 2009 recruit Latavious Williams has decided to no longer attend the University of Memphis next season. Continuing in their discussion, George Lapides and his co-host speculated that Georgetown may now re-enter the picture.

This news is quite confusing seeing as though Williams told MemphisRoar less than 24 hours ago that he was still committed to the University of Memphis. In response, we hit the phones. According to Williams, this is not true at all.

“I don’t know what’s going on, but I didn’t talk to anyone on the radio or say I wasn’t committed,” said Williams. “It’s a lie. Yes, I am still committed [to the University of Memphis] right now.”

Just be patient folks. Let this process play out. Latavious has made it clear that he wants to take his time, determine what will happen with the June 6th meetings with the NCAA and make a decision from there.

Just a little over 24 hours after Josh Pastner’s first commitment as a head coach, the news that the NCAA has levied accusations against the University of Memphis men’s basketball program brought the sky-high mood and optimism surrounding the program back down to earth in gut-wrenching fashion. It only seems fitting that the first good news under Pastner would be followed by yet another kick to the gut of the Memphis program and fans.

MemphisRoar had planned to get in touch with Latavious Williams Wednesday to get some thoughts on his commitment, but when we learned of the upcoming news from Dan Wolken and The Commercial Appeal, we decided to hold off so we could get Latavious’ reaction on these events as well.

Only 54 hours after he announced his intentions to attend the University of Memphis next season, Latavious Williams said he is now stuck in a “wait and see” position.
