Memphis Roar has a great group of fans that follow the Tigers. We have another nice contribution from one of Memphis Roar’s guest contributors, Mark Wesley. Mark was able to spend a few minutes talking to Memphis Tiger commit, Bakari Trotter. Trotter is a standout wide receiver from Horn Lake, MS.

Local recruiting is important to any program. This could not be truer with the University of Memphis considering it already has two verbal commits from Shelby-Metro high schools. Memphis Roar had the opportunity to speak with the first public verbal commitment of the 2010 class for the Tigers, Horn Lake High Schools’ standout WR, Bakari Trotter.  Read the rest of this entry »

The Inglorious Leftovers of MemphisRoar

Posted by Jordan Isaac On August - 27 - 2009

The creation of MemphisRoar.com was intended to serve the University of Memphis Tigers’ fan-base by bringing them recruiting information, college sports news, and anything else related to college sports. This website has survived for two reasons: dedicated fans and dedicated staff. I have been told that I need to earn my keep around here, and making my mark by releasing Xavier Henry news before it could be confirmed just simply wouldn’t do.

So this is my answer; a weekly column for you, the fan, to say whatever, make fun of whomever, and speak whatever creative thoughts are on your mind. Unfortunately, it’s a chance for me to speak my mind as well. Yes, you get to suffer by listening to me, the Michael Scott of MemphisRoar. Read the rest of this entry »

Memphis Makes Its Mark in the Bronx

Posted by Brooks Hansen On August - 23 - 2009

At the end of a tumultuous week for the University of Memphis basketball program and its fans, future Memphis star Will Barton and other potential keys to Memphis’ 2010 recruiting class in Joe Jackson and Roscoe Smith kept Memphis on the tips of the crowd’s tongues. This time, people were talking about Memphis in a positive way.

This past Wednesday afternoon, twenty-four of America’s brightest prep talents arrived in New York City for the third annual Boost Mobile Elite 24 game at Rucker Park (Bronx, NY). The week’s festivities were set to culminate Friday night on the famous outdoor playground, but mother-nature had other plans.

Tug’s Take on the NCAA Ruling

Posted by TUG On August - 20 - 2009

First, I will NEVER accept this ruling from the NCAA. It is wrong and blatantly discriminatory. NON BCS schools are subject to “selective punishment”. The player was cleard by the NCAA to play. There has to be culpability. There is NO PROOF that (1) Derrick didn’t take the SAT or (2) the University of Memphis was involved or had any knowledge of said accusation.

They can say whatever they want. I know what I saw. My brain can’t be suspended or vacated. Until the day that I die, the 2007-2008 Memphis Tigers WILL BE the winningnest team in the HISTORY of college basketball. I will always remember that we were 9 seconds away from our first national championship. I will always remember CDR, Joey Dorsey, Tone, Doz, D Rose, Kemp, Mack, Niles, Chance, Tag and even AA. There is NOTHING the NCAA can say or do to diminish their accomplishments, NEVER. Read the rest of this entry »

Things in Pairs

Posted by Brooks Hansen On August - 20 - 2009

First and foremost, clarification on the news that began breaking last night must be made. According to our sources, there will be no current or ongoing penalties for the University of Memphis men’s basketball team when the NCAA releases their findings today. Any and every penalty is in the past. Vacated Final Four? It has no bearing on the direction of the Tigers’ basketball program. An asterisk in the record books? People really pay attention to those? Probation? Probation does not matter when those at the helm remain principled and disciplined.

As news leaked late last night regarding the results of the NCAA’s findings into their investigation of the University of Memphis basketball program, the consensus reaction across varying fan-bases echos this sentiment: This is a reflection on former Memphis coach and current Kentucky coach John Calipari, not the University of Memphis (see links at the bottom).

Despite this unified reaction to the news that Memphis will be stripped of all 38 wins and its Final Four appearance from the 2007-2008 season, the public eye will likely be cast upon a pair of fan-bases; Memphis and Kentucky.
