Former Memphis State University head coach Gene Bartow was inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame last night. The 79-year-old Bartow was a part of the 2009 induction class. The ceremony took place in Kansas City. Memphis Roar partnered up with Matt Scott of TheShiver.com to capture some of the moments of Bartow’s induction.
Inducted into the Hall of Fame because of what he accomplished on the basketball floor, Bartow won 647 games in 34 seasons at six universities with 12 NCAA Tournament appearances, two Final Four trips, one national championship game appearance, and no NCAA probations.
Gene Bartow coached at Memphis from 1970 until 1974, leaving then Memphis State in 1974 for one season at Illinois. Bartow led the Tigers to back-to-back Missouri Valley Conference titles and took the Tigers to the 1973 national championship game against UCLA, in which the Tigers lost. Bartow finished with a record of 82-32 at Memphis State.
Bartow eventually returned to Memphis, where he now serves as President of Hoops, LP, the company that operates the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies.
Below is the video of his induction into the Hall of Fame.
