Just like the men’s basketball program did with Anthony Norris out of Texas, the University of Memphis women’s basketball program got their first 2011 commitment out of a Norris. For the women it was 5′9″ 2011 small forward Jailyn Norris out Chicago Heights, IL. Norris, who plays for Homewood-Flossmoor High School, is rated as the #44 small forward in the class of 2011 with a grade of 75 by ESPN Scouts, Inc.
According to her AAU coach Jerald Davis of the Chicago Hoops Express, Jailyn picked Memphis over Illinois State and Loyola after giving consideration to Missouri, West Virginia, Southern Illinois and Ball State. Jailyn is currently averaging 13.8 ppg. She has knocked down 35 three pointers and is now closing in on 1,000 points for the #17 ranked team in the Chicago area. Jailyn scored a career high 31 points against Sandburg in the Hillcrest Holiday tournament.
ESPN Scouts, Inc. had this to say about the newly committed Tiger:
Jailyn Norris showed the full package, except the shot. On the other hand, she had no trouble getting to the rim whenever she wanted to, and also understands the concept of changing speeds, which is one of the most underrated ballhandling skills. Norris is also quick, fast, athletic and anticipates well, which will put the 5-8 guard on a lot of collegiate recruiting lists.
For the women’s program, continued success on the recruiting trail is the key to building on the current strides Coach McFerrin has made. Currently tied for first place in Conference USA, the lady Tigers have turned a corner toward winning ways and it is commitments like Norris’ that will continue that trend.
