Season Finale

Posted by Larry On November - 27 - 2009

finaleTulsa and Memphis have a long history in athletics.  This dates back to the 60’s when both programs where in the Missouri Valley Conference.  In fact Tulsa and the Tigers have faced off 23 times with the Tigers holding a 14-9 advantage.  The Golden Hurricane have won the last two including 2005’s sensational overtime match up in Tulsa with DeAngelo’s leaping attempt on 4th down.  Prior to that meeting the Tigers and Tulsa hadn’t met since 1995 when the Tigers posted a 13-10 come from behind win in Tulsa.

Tigers Take on Houston; Begin Two-Game Road Finale

Posted by Larry On November - 21 - 2009

That magical 2003 season, as many have come to remember it, was not without its ups and downs.  Many remember the Louisville victory, the Cincinnati win, and of course the bowl victory over North Texas.  What many people might forget is that the Tigers lost their homecoming game that season.  In fact, they lost it badly to UAB 24-10.  The following week we would lose again to Mississippi State.  Then the Tigers turned things around quickly against Houston, in Houston.  Riding a two game losing streak, the Tigers went into Houston and defeated the Cougars 45-14, who where 5-1 at the time.  Memphis went on to win 6 of their last 7 games and finish at 9-4.  Houston, on the other hand, finished at 7-5 losing their last 4 in a row.

For the seniors, this day will be especailly bittersweet.  On one hand, you are celebrating the accomplishments of the young men who dedicated years of their lives to help build up the football program at the University of Memphis.  At the same time, most of these young men will never again walk out onto the Liberty Bowl field as representatives of the university.  For most players, their final home game is one that is both exciting and sad.  Exciting in that you can look back on the years with pride, but sad that you can’t keep playing the game you love.

Here is a quick synopsis of each Tiger player that will be playing their final home game.   Coach West is also included.

With today’s firing of Tommy West, we are bumping this article back up to the top for those that missed it. Many of the sentiments expressed by West in today’s press conference are laid out in our look at the current location of the University of Memphis football facilities.

What in world is going on? 1-4 versus the Sunbelt conference in their last 5 games? At least Rip Scherer could beat Arkansas State.  There is a problem when you are getting beat on the road and at home by teams you are superior to in both money and facilities. Read the rest of this entry »

It seems like just yesterday, but it’s been 13 years since that memorable night in 1996.  It was worth wading through the crowd of orange and blue.  Waiting in long lines to go to the bathroom was worth seeing Chris Powers’ amazing catch in the end zone.  It was even worth the trip to Baptist East Hospital afterwards.  Who knew goal posts where so heavy, or maybe it was the fat guy that came down with it?
