New Football Commit, Stevie Douglass

Posted by Mark Irving On June - 18 - 2010

Earlier this week, Coach Larry Porter received a verbal committment from Stevie Douglass. Douglass is a 6′4″, 200lb. pro-style quarterback out of Clinton, LA. Douglass was being recruited by3 SEC schools, LSU, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt.

Douglass is different from many other football recruits because he is home-schooled. Tim Tebow was also home-schooled but played football at a Florida High School. Douglass is the first quarterback that plays for a home-schooled team to receive this kind of attention. Douglass plays for the Christian Home Educators Fellowship Patriots. His father, Steve Douglass is the head coach of his team.

Posted by Mark Irving On March - 17 - 2010

stjohnsLast time the Memphis basketball team played a team wearing red with a coach in danger of being fired, things didn’t turn out so well. Memphis lost to Houston. The Cougars won the Conference USA championship, going on to the NCAA tournament and  saving Tom Penders job…for now. Memphis opens NIT play against another team wearing red that may also be looking for a new coach next year. Norm Roberts, the current coach, is in his 5th season for St. John’s. His overall record at St. John’s is 81-100. This year’s team (17-15) will be making its first post-season appearance under Roberts.  Read the rest of this entry »

Senior Willie Kemp, a fine young man

Posted by Mark Irving On March - 6 - 2010

wille_kemp2Many words can be used to describe Willie Kemp; fan favorite, leader, committed, good son but if you had to sum up Willie in one word it would be teammate.  In battles of old, armies would form lines and prepare for battle. Each army would place their strongest men on the front line. When these men fell in battle it was the responsibility for the man in the 2nd line to fill in for the fallen hero. If these 2nd line men don’t do their job the battle will soon end in defeat for them.  For most of his career at Memphis Willie has been that guy on the 2nd line…always ready to do whatever was needed of him.

Icy Tigers can’t Stoppa’ the Papa

Posted by Mark Irving On January - 31 - 2010

memphis_smuWith shooting nearly as icy as the weather outside, Memphis loses to Southern Methodist 70-60 on Saturday.  Memphis shot poorly; 32% FG, 36% 3PT, 63% FT. The Tigers were outrebounded by 11 and didn’t force many turnovers. SMU forward Papa Dia continued the trend of Memphis allowing post players to have career games against the Tigers. Dia finished with a double-double, 23 points and 14 rebounds.  Add those things together and couple them with being on the road and it doesn’t usually end well.

Seniors Go For Record Against East Carolina

Posted by Mark Irving On January - 13 - 2010

ecuSeniors Willie Kemp, Doneal Mack and Pierre Henderson-Niles will be playing in their 59th conference game against the East Carolina Pirates on Wednesday night. These seniors have never lost a conference game in their entire playing careers at Memphis. Currently these players are tied with 2 other players, Robert Dozier and Antonio Anderson, for 58 straight conference wins by a player. A win against ECU will give Kemp, Niles and Mack the record for most consecutive conference wins by a player. A win against ECU will also give the Tigers a tie for the record for consecutive conference regular season wins. Memphis is currently 2nd to the 1950-54 Kentucky team with 50 straight conference regular season wins. A win against ECU will inch the Tigers to within one game of tying the overall record for consecutive conference including post-season tournaments. The Tigers are currently at 62 consecutive wins. The 1945-1950 Kentucky team currently holds that record at 64. Collectively this is nothing short of amazing. Read the rest of this entry »
