Memphis was playing its best basketball down the stretch, winning seven of their final eight games. Having charged back into the picture for a potential at-large bid, the Tigers dream of reaching the NCAA Tournament likely required two wins in the conference tournament. On Thursday afternoon, those dreams turned to a nightmare against Houston.

Leading up to this game, the Tigers made it clear that they wanted to face Houston. Houston made it clear that they were ready. Led by Aubrey Coleman’s 21 points, including a step-thru jumper in the lane with 5 seconds remaining, Houston upset the Tigers for the second time this season 66-65 in the quarterfinals Thursday.

University of Memphis vs. University of Houston

After Monday’s practice at the Larry O. Finch Center, University of Memphis guards Doneal Mack, Elliot Williams and Wesley Witherspoon made it clear. They wanted to see Houston on Thursday for the second-round quarterfinal matchup in the Conference USA Tournament.

“Very badly,” said sophomore guard Elliot Williams when asked if he would like to see Houston in the second round. “They beat us badly. I personally had one of the worst games of my career.”

“If you ask anyone on the team, they would say we want another shot at Houston,” Wesley Witherspoon said.

With the regular season now closed, the 2009-2010 Memphis Tigers look to the post-season. With hopes of making into the NCAA Tournament field of 64, the Tigers (23-8,  13-3 C-USA) have the opportunity to play their way in by winning the Conference USA Tournament or possibly by winning two games. The 2010 tournament is set to begin in Tulsa at the BOK Center on Wednesday, March 10th going through Saturday, March 13th.

Senior Willie Kemp, a fine young man

wille_kemp2Many words can be used to describe Willie Kemp; fan favorite, leader, committed, good son but if you had to sum up Willie in one word it would be teammate.  In battles of old, armies would form lines and prepare for battle. Each army would place their strongest men on the front line. When these men fell in battle it was the responsibility for the man in the 2nd line to fill in for the fallen hero. If these 2nd line men don’t do their job the battle will soon end in defeat for them.  For most of his career at Memphis Willie has been that guy on the 2nd line…always ready to do whatever was needed of him.

Memphis Travels to Houston

img_0022The University of Memphis Tigers (20-7, 10-2) visit the Houston Cougars (13-13, 5-7) this Wednesday. After winning five straight conference games, the Tigers are looking to avoid a possible “trap” game against the Cougars, whose record is not necessarily a cause for concern. The Tigers have four regular-season games left, all against conference opponents, and the biggest challenge may be UAB in Birmingham. Tigers Smack Doherty’s Mustangs

smuMemphis avenged an earlier loss to SMU with a 75-63 victory over the Mustangs at FedEx Forum on Saturday. Memphis came out determined not to repeat what happened in Dallas. Behind a barrage of made three-pointers, Memphis opened up a 17 point lead in the first half.
