New Football Commit, Stevie Douglass
Earlier this week, Coach Larry Porter received a verbal committment from Stevie Douglass. Douglass is a 6′4″, 200lb. pro-style quarterback out of Clinton, LA. Douglass was being recruited by3 SEC schools, LSU, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt.
Douglass is different from many other football recruits because he is home-schooled. Tim Tebow was also home-schooled but played football at a Florida High School. Douglass is the first quarterback that plays for a home-schooled team to receive this kind of attention. Douglass plays for the Christian Home Educators Fellowship Patriots. His father, Steve Douglass is the head coach of his team.

Memphis’ Aussie footballer Hornsey a trendsetter?
At this time last year, Tom Hornsey was playing in the championship game of the Geelong Football League, a 12-team Australian Rules football league based in Victoria, Australia. He had never punted an American football or dreamed of playing in the National Football League. Then he received a letter from ProKick Australia, an academy designed to help aspiring kickers transition from Australian Rules football to American football.
Lonnie Ballentine Back to Memphis
Lonnie Ballentine, a 6’3” 200 defensive back out of Southwind High School in Memphis has committed to and signed with the Memphis Tiger football team. Ballentine originally committed to Memphis back in the summer but decided to re-open his recruitment after Coach Tommy West was fired. Ballentine chose the Tigers over 4 SEC schools; Tennessee, Ole Miss, LSU and Arkansas.
The good news about Ballentine’s commitment gets even better when you consider that he will graduate early. He has already signed a letter of intent with the Tigers and will be eligible for the 2010 season. Ballentine will be a valuable piece in Coach Porters’ effort to rebuild the football team.
