Very nice, appreciate the video. He looks like he's got an accurate arm.

Not to nitpick, but taking every snap out of shotgun formation is not "pro-style."

Well...It will be an awesome deal if we can recruit and keep great athletes at the quarterback position. My hope is that we can get them ready for battle, insync with their team (have rythm), and provide LINE PROTECTION.

Does anybody have any thoughts or predictions on how well the offensive line will hopefully do this year?

We have center Brad Paul (6-3/290) the lone senior, with four juniors — Ronald Leary (6-4/313), Dominik Riley (6-4/315), Joel McCleod (6-3/310) and Tommy Walker (6-3/270) — joining him in the starting lineup. Two more players with starting experience, Michael Antonescu (6-4/290) and Lionel Henderson (6-4/275) add depth to the offensive line. Antonescu started the final three games of 2009 at right guard. I would like to think they will be much improved from last year but depth will be much of the problem for most of the team. The key for this entire team will be finding players to provide depth at spots especially on the offensive line.

After watching Ryan Williams (6-5/216) spring game performance — completing 15 of 17 attempts for 186 yards and 3 touchdowns — I would think Williams is a realistic option to start at quarterback come September, though Smith seems to be the safer pick at this point. More will be decided when practice resumes in August and should make things very interesting this fall.

Paul and Riley are both seniors. Our offensive line is one of the strongest positkions we have returning. For example, Athlon's ranks Memphis offensive line as the third best in the entire conference. Besides that, we are ranked in the bottom half of the conference in every other position. Porter needs another coupld classes like this past one to get the talent where it needs to be.

At QB, Bass and Sumerlin will get the opportunity to compete with Smith. Ryan Williams had a great spring, but this race is far from over considering Bass had tweaked his knee early in the spring and Sumerlin had to have shoulder surgery. Both will be factors in the depth chart.

I mistyped....lol....I meant QB depth chart...but thanks for the thorough analysis.

I fully expect Marcus Ball to be in jail for assaulting some poor WR on the field.

That is actually pretty encouraging. So we are at least two deep at each position with some quality talent. I still think that we are going to surprise people this year.

We have heard all about the freshman for basketball getting on campus but what about the freshman for football? Do they come early or do they just show up to camp?

I'm not sure how many, but yea, we do have some in for the first summer session. However, the just about all of them will be here for the second summer session in July. They are doing off season conditioning and workouts now.

I want to reiterate that the competition for QB is going to be a war the first two weeks of preseason camp. I fully expect Andy Sumerlin to get the opportunity to battle it out with Smith, Bass, and Williams. Despite his big spring, I still lean to redshirting Williams, but if he continues to develop and perform like he did in the spring, the staff may have to make a hard decision.

Before he was injured, how was Sumerlin looking in comparison to the others? How was his accuracy, short and long and how was his arm strength in comparison?

Not Ed, but I think AS is more of CLP's "type" of QB. He's tall, accurate, elusive in the pocket and makes good decisions.

Smith and Bass are great athletes, and I hope we'll be seeing them on the field- whether at QB or not. Tyler reminds me a lot of Travis Anglin (and yes, that is a good thing...lol)

Well no one got to see much of Sumerlin in the spring as he got hurt within the first week. However, he has a gun and is another big QB that Coach Porter and Coach Price seem to want for this offense in the future. Sumerlin was the one the staff expected to push Smith for the starting position when he was signed. But to their credit, Tyler Bass had a fairly good spring despite tweaking his knee and Ryan Williams surprised even the staff with how good he was this early in his college career. Even Will Gilchrist performed fairly well when given the opportunity, but despite going 7 for 7 in the spring game, people must remember that he doesn't have the size or arm of the others. Gilchrist is a kid I wouldn't mind seeing moved to WR / H-back. Gilchrist runs a legit sub 4.7. Not saying it is going to happen, but if you look at the logjam at QB (Stevie Douglas, the recent commit might be here next spring) and Gilchrist is a good enough athlete to contribute elsewhere. If he doesn't get a spot on the two deep, I could see Bass being able to play a hybrid receiver / tight end.

But big strong armed quarterbacks seem to be the direction the position is heading. We probably will see very few dual threat guys signed going forward. The staff wants pocket passers with the ability to get the ball vertically down field.

It is going to be refreshing to see our QB's using all of the field and throwing vertically downfield.
