Can someone tell me why we celebrate this holiday in the USA? Or is this just another excuse for Americans to get drunk.

Hey, we celebrate Cinco Demayo (sp?), lol. St. Paddy's Day makes a whole lot more sense than that.
It's Cinco de Mayo.
Spelling errors on St. Patrick's Day will be forgiven. It's expected that most people will be typing drunk.
