The Memphis Tigers go into Saturday night’s game against the Mustangs of SMU looking to avenge a rare conference road loss suffered a few weeks ago. Questions still remain on whether Elliot Williams, Memphis’ leading scorer, will play Saturday, after sustaining a bruised knee in the Tigers’ 77-64 win against Tulane on Wednesday. The Mustangs (12-13, 5-6) are looking to get back to .500 in conference, while the Tigers (19-7, 9-2) are hoping to keep pressure on UTEP for the number one spot in C-USA.

Former Memphians End Memphis’ Streak

Posted by Peyton Merriam On January - 21 - 2010

Tiger fans packed the FedEx Forum Wednesday night in hopes of seeing the Tigers make history. The University of Memphis Tigers were looking to do something that has become normal, something that has gone on for years, something that current Tiger players have always known– beating a Conference USA opponent.

The Tigers went into Wednesday night’s game against UTEP riding a 64 game conference win streak, a win streak that only the University of Kentucky has ever reached (late 40s-early 50s). A win on Wednesday night would separate the Tigers from the pack, putting them in first place. With all the hype and excitement, the Tigers came ready to play, but so did the Miners.

Tigers Raid Pirates

Posted by Peyton Merriam On January - 14 - 2010

Wesley WitherspoonWith classes starting the following day and an earlier tip-off time than normal, one might suspect that attendance would be down for the Tigers’ home game against the ECU Pirates on Wednesday night.  Despite the conditions, Tiger fans did what they are used to doing: showing up and supporting their basketball team. The Tiger players also followed through with what they are used to doing: beating another Conference USA opponent. Although the Tigers had a lackluster first half, thanks to the efforts of Wesley Witherspoon and Doneal Mack, the conference win streak continues.

Tigers Declaw Jaguars

Posted by Mark Irving On December - 29 - 2009

iupuiThe Memphis Tigers basketball team can be something of beauty to watch. They can also look like a hideous deformed monster. IUPUI rolled into town with a 9-4 record and was considered to be the 2nd best team this young Tiger team had faced. There were some concerns prior to the game that the Tigers would be rusty. Another concern was that Memphis would overlook IUPUI with the rivalry game of Tennessee just a few days away. Fortunately these concerns were unfounded. There was only a brief glimpse of that hideous monster that showed in Boston. Instead the Tigers rolled to a beautiful 87-67 victory over the Jaguars. There was no apparent looking ahead to the next opponent either. The team looked well-rested, rust-free and ready for the next opponent.

Memphis-UMASS Preview

Posted by David On December - 18 - 2009

Josh Pastner takes his University of Memphis Tigers to Boston tomorrow to face the University of Massachusetts Minutemen.  The Tigers survived a scare last week from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in their first official road game of the season.  The Tigers rallied from a five point halftime deficit to win 83-71.  Elliot Williams led the way with 21, his seventh consecutive 20 point outing.  Roburt Sallie chipped in 18 and shot at least 50% from the three-point line for the fourth time in the last five games.  The Tigers improved their overall record to 7-1 with the win.

Pastner Still Undefeated; Deflects Praise

Posted by David On November - 15 - 2009

JPThe Josh Pastner Era started with a win. Over 17,000 University of Memphis fans filled the seats at the FedEx Forum Friday night to watch the men’s basketball team take on Jackson State University.  New Tiger head coach Josh Pastner repeatedly said in the off-season, “I am still undefeated.” Using this line as humorous deflection of the summer’s tumultuous events, Pastner will milk this witty line for as long as he is able. After an 82-53 victory against Jackson State, that ability still exists.
